Pune: Mundhwa Hosts First-Ever Women’s Wrestling Match, Marking a Historic Milestone
Pune, 11th March 2025: There was a time when women were not even allowed to watch wrestling at village fairs. However, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Mundhwa village made history by organizing its first-ever women’s wrestling match, marking a new chapter in women’s empowerment. This groundbreaking event was made possible through the persistent efforts of social activist Gauri Pingle. Coincidentally, the Mundhwa Fair fell on March 8 this year, making it an ideal occasion to celebrate women’s strength and resilience.
The intense match featured national champion Sonali Mandlik and Sanjana Disale, with Mandlik emerging victorious. Gauri Pingle played a crucial role in organizing this historic bout, dedicating the event to the memory of her late father-in-law, Pratap Pandurang Pingle. She awarded the winning wrestler a cash prize of ₹51,000 and a prestigious mace.
Inspired by this initiative, villagers have pledged to organize women’s wrestling matches annually, starting in 2025, Pingle stated in a press release.
Speaking at the event, Gauri Pingle emphasized the importance of self-defense for women. “For true women’s empowerment and safety, they must be trained in wrestling from a young age. Every parent should encourage their daughters to learn self-defense, as it will help curb violence against women,” she said.
The match was conducted under the guidance of Mahakal Taleem’s coach, More Ustad, with Sandeep Wanjale officiating as the referee. The event saw a large turnout of villagers and esteemed dignitaries, reflecting strong community support.
Thanks to Gauri Pingle’s initiative, a new tradition of women’s wrestling has begun in Mundhwa, offering women a powerful platform to showcase their strength and skills.
