Pune Municipal Corporation Acts on Police Request, Installs Street Lights and CCTV in Key Areas

Pune, 30th December 2024: In the wake of a recent rape incident in Bopdev Ghat, Pune Police have sent a formal letter to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration urging the installation of street lights and CCTV cameras in 274 deserted spots across the city. The Municipal Corporation has already begun work on installing street lights in some of these identified areas.
The call for better safety measures follows a detailed inspection by the Pune Police Commissionerate. Officers surveyed several isolated areas under the jurisdiction of various police stations to identify locations vulnerable to crimes, particularly those involving women. Following the inspection, the Pune Police Commissionerate issued the letter to the Municipal Corporation, emphasizing the need for better illumination and surveillance to ensure the safety of young women and other residents.
Currently, the Municipal Corporation has installed a total of 193,364 street lights throughout Pune. However, the corporation has acknowledged the need to replace inadequate lighting in several areas. In response to the recent incident at Bopdev Ghat, the Municipal Corporation has already erected 18 electric poles in the area, improving visibility and security. Similarly, 63 electric poles have been installed along the Taljai foothills to Taljai Mandir route.
Additionally, this year, 8,950 new high-efficiency lamps were installed in the Sinhagad Road Ward Office area. The Municipal Corporation is also working to improve lighting in phases across other regions, including Dhankawadi-Sahakarnagar, Warje-Karvenagar, and Kondhwa-Yewalewadi. In the coming year, 1,666 new electric poles will be installed in villages that are part of the city’s expanding areas.
Manisha Shekatkar, head of the electricity department, also noted that 677 tree branches had been trimmed along major roads and VIP routes to ensure proper street lighting. These measures reflect the Municipal Corporation’s commitment to improving public safety, especially in areas with previously inadequate lighting.
