Pune, 22nd November 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health department is championing the cause of cremating deceased animals at the incinerator plant near Naidu Hospital, citing concerns about potential health risks associated with burying animal bodies.

PMC underscores that burying animal carcasses can lead to the emission of unpleasant odors, posing health hazards for residents in the proximity. In response to this, PMC is urging all citizens, including animal enthusiasts, to choose cremation at the incinerator plant as a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to burial.

The incinerator facility imposes a nominal fee for pet owners opting for cremation, while the cremation of stray animals is offered free of charge. Operational since 2018, the incinerator plant has witnessed the cremation of approximately 3,873 domestic and stray animals between March and September.

PMC has established a fee structure for cremation services, charging Rs 2,000 for cremating dogs and cats within municipal limits, and Rs 3,000 for larger animals. Notably, there is no fee for the cremation of stray animals. During the period from March to September 2023, the Municipal Corporation generated revenue totaling Rs 18,23,075 from the cremation services provided by the incinerator plant.
