Pune, 9th May 2023: The upcoming El Nino weather phenomenon is expected to result in lower rainfall in June and July, which will impact dam stock and water supply in Pune city. In response, the Maharashtra state government has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Irrigation Department to submit an action plan for conserving water and identifying alternative sources.

As a part of this plan, the PMC has decided to reduce the water supply starting May 18 and cut the water supply for the entire city every Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s predictions, the El Nino will disrupt the monsoon season and potentially result in less rainfall this year. Therefore, the state government has instructed the relevant departments to start planning for water conservation and alternative sources.

The Khadakwasla Dam project currently holds 11 TMC of water, which needs to last until August 15. The Municipal Corporation needs about half a TMC of water every month, making water conservation and alternative sources critical.
