Pune Municipal Corporation Introduces Cutting-Edge Trucks to Revolutionize Waste Transportation
Pune, 27th May 2023: With the increasing volume of waste in Pune city, waste transportation has become a pressing issue. To address this challenge, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced three state-of-the-art trucks into its fleet, capable of transporting 20 to 22 tons of waste. The inauguration of these trucks took place today, with Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil officiating the event.
The launch ceremony was held at Sanas Ground near Sarasbaug, attended by MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Additional Commissioner Dr Kunal Khemnar, President of KEITH Company Lindsay Foster Drago, Director Varun Gajra, and Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department Asha Raut.
Purchased at a cost of approximately two and a half crore rupees, these three trucks were acquired on an experimental basis using funds provided by the central government for solid waste management through the 15th Finance Commission. Notably, these trucks are equipped with a cutting-edge walking floor system, designed for ease of operation, and training will be provided to municipal employees.
Currently, highway trucks are utilized for waste transportation in the municipal corporation. However, these trucks have a limited capacity of 5 to 10 tons and lack a waste compression system, resulting in prolonged filling and unloading times and frequent spillage.
In stark contrast, the newly introduced trucks boast a revolutionary walking floor system that allows for swift waste filling within 10 minutes. The waste is automatically compacted inside the truck, enabling a single Keith truck to accommodate the waste equivalent to three highway trucks. This significant improvement in capacity not only reduces transportation costs but also minimizes waste spillage during unloading, informed Raut.
