Pune, 23rd January 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to appoint female attendants on school buses for its Vidyaniketan and Kridaniketan schools to enhance student safety during transportation. This decision aligns with the new Maharashtra Government policy on student bus transportation.

Female attendants will be mandatory on buses carrying female students, with provisions for this to be made in PMC’s next year’s budget. The appointments are expected to be made in the coming days, according to Deputy Commissioner Asha Raut. This move follows incidents of abuse by school bus drivers in various cities across the state.

Currently, 48 buses provided by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) are used to transport students, both boys and girls, of PMC schools. The PMPML had requested the Maharashtra Government to provide safety attendants on the buses following the government resolution.

The decision to appoint female attendants was taken in response to the new government policy aimed at preventing incidents of abuse against children, especially girls, by school bus drivers. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure student safety during transportation, as mandated by the new state government policy on student bus transportation.
