Jewellery Thieves Target Elderly Women in Pune Residential Areas

Pune, 23rd January 2025: A series of jewellery thefts targeting elderly women has hit several Pune neighbourhoods, with thieves boldly entering residential societies to snatch valuables. The latest incidents occurred in Karve Nagar, Baner, and Kothrud areas.
In Baner’s Shivneri Apartments, two motorcycle-borne thieves snatched a mangalsutra worth Rs. 43,000 from a 65-year-old woman on Tuesday night. Baner Police have registered a case against the unidentified culprits.
Another shocking incident took place in Karve Nagar’s Navasahyadri Society, where thieves not only stole an elderly woman’s mangalsutra but returned to retrieve a broken piece of the jewellery. The victim fell on the road during the assault, as captured by CCTV cameras.
In Kothrud, on DP Road, a woman’s jewellery was stolen inside her society premises on Tuesday evening while she and her husband returning home. The thieves, who arrived on a motorcycle, entered the society compound and snatched the jewellery before fleeing.
These incidents have raised concerns among residents about the increasing boldness of thieves and the safety of elderly citizens. Local police are investigating the cases, with CCTV footage providing potential leads. Residents are demanding increased police patrols and enhanced security measures in residential areas to curb this alarming trend.
