Pune, 11th February 2025: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to clean all Elevated Storage Reservoirs (ESRs) and Ground Storage Reservoirs (GSRs) in the city in response to the increasing number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases. The cleaning operation, set to be completed within a month, will cover approximately 350 water tanks that supply water to various parts of the city.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP announced that the water supply might be temporarily disrupted in certain areas during the cleaning process. This decision comes after bacteria linked to GBS were found in water samples from various locations in the city’s hotspots, although the exact source remains unidentified.

The cleaning initiative is part of PMC’s preventive measures to control the GBS outbreak. PMC Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale has issued orders for this comprehensive cleaning operation, which will involve removing sediment and thoroughly cleaning each tank.

Authorities have been instructed to minimise disruption to daily activities during the cleaning process, affecting only the specific areas served by the tank being cleaned at any given time. The operation will also include inspecting the surrounding areas of the tanks, underground sewage systems, and wastewater pipelines.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP emphasised that the cleaning would be carried out without significantly disrupting the daily water supply to citizens. This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety of Pune’s water supply and potentially curb the spread of GBS in the city.
