Pune, 10th August 2025: In a bid to prevent assaults on its officers and employees during operations, as well as irregularities in civic properties and parks, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has formed Special Quick Response Teams (QRT). The first QRT unit will be deployed from September 1, with four more teams to follow after completing their training.

The initiative comes in response to repeated incidents of life-threatening attacks on civic staff during enforcement drives by departments such as Encroachment, Sky Signs, and Construction. Cases of abuse, assaults, thefts at vehicle and garbage depots, and even molestation incidents in public parks have also been reported.

“During municipal actions, officers and employees often face attacks and beatings. There are also theft cases at depots. The QRT will work to protect civic staff and property,” said PMC Security Officer Rakesh Vitkar.

From its 1,200-strong security workforce, PMC has selected 50 personnel for QRT duty, providing them with specialised training in protection and rapid response. The teams will operate across 15 ward offices, five civic zones, parks, vehicle depots, garbage depots, and other PMC properties.

Each QRT team will have eight personnel working in three shifts, equipped with a dedicated vehicle for quick deployment. They will respond to emergencies such as thefts, molestation, disputes, and attacks, ensuring immediate assistance to the concerned department.

The PMC hopes the move will not only safeguard its staff during high-risk operations but also deter potential offenders from disrupting civic functions or damaging public property.
