Pune: Mysterious Pig Deaths In Kothrud Raise Concern; Officials Suspect Jaundice-Like Disease

Kothrud, 13th February 2025: A series of unexplained pig deaths in Kothrud have prompted an investigation by the State Government’s Animal Husbandry Department. A team of three officials conducted an on-site inspection on Wednesday (12th February) and performed an autopsy, which revealed signs of a jaundice-like disease. Some of the pig’s organs have been sent to a laboratory in Bhopal for further analysis.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has captured 76 pigs and placed them under observation. They will be sent to a slaughterhouse in two days. Meanwhile, 41 dead pigs have already been removed, and spraying operations are underway in affected areas to prevent further spread of infection.
Delays in addressing the issue were attributed to a lack of coordination between the PMC’s Health Department and officials from the Kothrud-Bavdhan Ward Office. However, after the Animal Husbandry Department intervened, Assistant Commissioner Balasaheb Gaikwad and his team inspected Bharati Nagar and found a dead pig at the Kothrud garbage depot. The autopsy confirmed the presence of a jaundice-like disease, though laboratory tests will determine the exact cause.
PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade assured that proactive measures are being taken, including the formation of a special task force to monitor the situation and prevent further incidents.
