Pune: NCP Leader Rupali Chakankar’s Brother Defeated in Nandur Sarpanch Bypoll in Daund
Daund, 29th April 2026: In a politically significant by-election for the post of sarpanch in Nandur gram panchayat of Daund taluka, Vishal Narendra Thorat emerged victorious, defeating Santosh Baban Borate, the brother of former Maharashtra State Commission for Women chairperson and senior NCP leader Rupali Chakankar, by a margin of 304 votes.
Nandur gram panchayat is considered politically important in the Daund region. In the elections held around two-and-a-half years ago, supporters of MLA Rahul Kul had come together to establish their dominance over the gram panchayat. At that time, Yuvraj Baban Borate was elected as the first directly elected sarpanch by securing victory with a margin of 194 votes.
As per a pre-decided power-sharing arrangement among the ruling group, Yuvraj Borate resigned from the post after two years, leading to the by-election for the vacant seat.
The contest for the sarpanch post saw five candidates in the fray — Santosh Baban Borate, Vishal Narendra Thorat, Kiran Vijay Thorat, Jamaluddin Sheikh and Yashwant Barve.
Vishal Thorat was considered a strong contender as both his parents had earlier served as sarpanch, giving him a strong political legacy and local experience.
During the counting of votes held in Daund on Wednesday, Vishal Thorat took an early lead and maintained it till the end. He secured 830 votes, while Santosh Borate received 526 votes.
