Pune: Nine-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Water-Filled Pit Near Under-Construction Railway Flyover in Ghorpadi
Ghorpadi, 30th March 2025: In a tragic incident, a nine-year-old schoolboy drowned in a water-filled pit near the under-construction railway flyover in Ghorpadi. The incident came to light on Saturday (29th March) evening after the boy’s body was found in the waterlogged excavation site. The deceased has been identified as Krish Subhash Angarkar (9), a resident of Khan Road near Gurudwara in the Pune Cantonment area.
According to the police, Krish was a Class 4 student at a school in Ghorpadi. After school hours on Friday, he was supposed to visit his elder brother’s school, as they usually returned home together. However, when Krish failed to reach his brother’s school, his sibling returned home alone. When Krish did not come home, his worried family began searching for him. They inquired with his school friends and searched nearby areas but were unable to locate him.
On Saturday afternoon, the family filed a missing person’s complaint at Wanowrie Police Station. Since Krish’s brother’s school falls under the jurisdiction of Mundhwa Police, officers from both Wanowrie and Mundhwa stations initiated a search operation. Under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Neelkanth Jagtap, the Mundhwa Police launched a thorough search of the Ghorpadi area, where the railway flyover construction is underway.
During the search, local children informed the police that Krish may have fallen into a water-filled pit dug for the flyover project. On receiving the information, fire brigade personnel and police rushed to the site around 5:30 PM. Using two motor pumps, they drained the water over the next hour and a half. Krish’s lifeless body was recovered from the pit. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival, stating that he had drowned after water entered his nose and mouth.
The police revealed that the excavation site was surrounded by five to six-foot-high iron barricades, with a one-foot gap at the bottom. They suspect that Krish may have crawled through the gap out of curiosity and accidentally fallen into the pit while peeking inside.
The sight of Krish’s schoolbag and floating books in the water brought his grieving parents to tears. Following the incident, the police inspected the construction site and held the contractor responsible for the safety lapse. Senior Inspector Neelkanth Jagtap stated that on Sunday, a case of culpable homicide was registered against the contractor at Mundhwa Police Station.
