Pune, 11th January 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has dismissed reports of dogs eating human remains at the Vaikunth crematorium in Navi Peth. However, the administration has directed a show-cause notice to be issued to the contractor responsible for the facility’s maintenance. Immediate steps for cleanup and other improvements have also been ordered.

A video allegedly showing stray dogs with human remains at the crematorium circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage among residents. In response, senior PMC officials, including representatives from the Electricity Department, conducted an on-site inspection.

Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. stated, “Our investigation found no evidence that dogs had taken or consumed human remains. The claims made in the video are unsubstantiated.”

Despite this, the administration has taken steps to address concerns. Show-cause notices have been issued to contractors responsible for cleaning, maintenance, funerary services, and repair work at the crematorium. Instructions have been given to ensure regular cleaning, trim dangerous tree branches, and improve overall hygiene at the site.
The presence of stray dogs at the crematorium has been attributed to some citizens feeding them on the premises.

Prithviraj B.P. stated, “We have instructed that food not be given to stray dogs inside the crematorium premises. The health department has begun efforts to capture stray dogs in the area, and this action will continue moving forward.”

The PMC has assured citizens that the situation is under control and that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain the sanctity and cleanliness of the crematorium.
