Pune, 6th September 2022: Property tax will be levied as per the price of flats and the owners of luxury flats will have to pay the same amount of property tax. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has now decided to charge capital property tax on 80,000 houses.

Presently PMC imposes property tax as per the ready reckoner rate. But this results in property tax being levied at the same rate as flats bought at expensive prices in luxury societies and high profile societies without any facilities.

A flat of 500 square feet in a simple society costs Rs 20 lakhs while in large housing projects it costs Rs 40 lakhs with all amenities. Therefore, this important decision has been taken by the municipal administration to avoid disparity in the levy.

In this regard, initially on the pilot project, 100 houses have been levied. The municipal administration has received a report on this. It has come out in the inspection that the municipal administration gets more property if the tax is levied on the spot. So now the municipal administration has decided to levy capital tax.

Regarding this, municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar informed that there are many types of housing projects in the city. It has many types of facilities, including a swimming pool, gymnasium, cinema hall, hotel, playground, entertainment centre, etc. In some places, there are societies without any facilities.

“While charging property tax was as per ready reckoner. So now the tax will be levied according to the facility and the price of the flats. The more luxurious the facility, the higher the tax,” he added further.

Kumar stated that”More types of facilities and property tax will be levied according to the price. This will bring uniformity in taxation. Therefore, approximately 80,000 properties in a ward will be charged capital tax initially.”
