Pune, 4th June 2021: For the prevention of the corona epidemic, the government is giving full emphasis on vaccine production and vaccination in the country. In this series, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) today gave approval to the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) for the manufacture of Sputnik-V.

SII had sought permission for a license from DCGI to make Russian vaccine Sputnik-V in India. After the approval of DCGI, Serum Institute will be able to manufacture Sputnik-V in India. At present only Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is producing the Sputnik V vaccine in India.

According to officials, Serum Institute will produce and supply 100 million doses of Covishield in June. It is also making the Novavax vaccine. Regulatory approval for Novavax is yet to be received from the USA.

At the same time, no decision has been taken to exempt the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer from compensation for the adverse effect of the corona vaccine. NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr VK Paul said that in case of giving exemption to Pfizer, the government will take full care of those indigenous companies which have played an important role in providing vaccines in the country.
