Pune Onion Prices Surge by Rs 25 per Kg in 1.5 Months; Retail Rates Touch Rs 70
Pune, 9th September 2026: Onion prices have risen sharply in Pune over the past one-and-a-half months, with retail rates increasing by nearly ₹25 per kg. The price surge has added to household expenses, particularly during the ongoing festive season.
Good-quality onions that were selling for around ₹18–₹25 per kg about one-and-a-half months ago are now being sold at ₹42–₹50 per kg in the wholesale market. Retail consumers are paying around ₹60–₹70 per kg, traders said.
At the Gultekdi Market Yard, onions are arriving from various parts of Pune district as well as Shrigonda, Parner and other areas of Ahilyanagar district. Around 100 vehicles carrying onions are currently arriving at the market every day.
Deficient Rainfall Affects Onion Production
Traders attribute the recent price rise to lower onion production in several parts of the country. South India is a major onion-producing region, but rainfall has remained below expectations in several areas this year.
Rainfall-related issues have also affected other onion-producing regions, raising concerns over supplies in the coming weeks.
The increase in prices has provided some relief to onion farmers, who have faced low returns over the past two years. Farmers said the current prices are significantly better than the rates they received previously.
Farmer Nitin Thorat said, “Farmers are satisfied as onion prices have increased. Compared with the past two years, we are receiving comparatively better prices this year.”
Onion trader Ram Narwade said, “Rainfall has been deficient in onion-producing areas, which is expected to reduce production and has resulted in a rise in onion prices. The current prices are satisfactory compared with those received over the past four to five years.”
With production and supply likely to remain under pressure, market participants expect onion prices to remain firm and potentially rise further in the coming days.
For consumers, however, the sharp increase has added another burden to monthly household budgets.
