Pune, 30th November 2022: Friendships with strangers on social media are often lost. Extortion (sextortion) by threatening to broadcast photographs and audio tapes has increased. Many people have been cheated out of lakhs of rupees due to the lure of virtual friendship on social media.

Till the end of October this year, 1,445 complaints of sextortion have been filed at the Cyber Police Station of Pune Police. Last year, till the end of October, 685 complaints were filed with the cyber police. Two months ago, a youth from the Dattawadi area died by suicide after jumping from the 10th floor of a building after they were threatened with the circulation of pictures on social media. The Dattawadi police conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and arrested a youth from Gurugothia village in Rajasthan. The investigation revealed that the women of Gurugothia village were also involved in this crime.

Gangs of extortionist cyber thieves are active in different parts of the country. Many people have been cheated due to their friendship with a stranger on social media, and some people do not file complaints with the police. From youth to senior citizens, they find themselves in the net of thieves. If a stranger sends a friend request through social media, ignore it. Senior Police Inspector Meenal Supe-Patil of Cyber Police Station of Pune Police has appealed not to respond to the thieves.

A stranger sends a message through social media. The account from which the message is sent has a picture of a young woman. Therefore, the complainant gets the impression that the girl has sent a friend request. The thieves then ask the complainant to send photographs. Threats of defamation by circulating the photograph or audio tape on social media are soon made. Complainants do not report to the police for fear of defamation and instead deposit money into a given bank account.

Cyber crooks lure the complainant into the net and ask him to send pictures and audio tapes. Social media video calls are printed and threatened to be misused. At such a time, the complainant should not panic. Complain to the police without fear of threats from thieves. Maharashtra Cyber Police has started a helpline (No.-1930) for complainants. Report to this helpline number. The threat of thieves should not be heeded. Meenal Supe-Patil, Senior Police Inspector of Cyber Police Station, has appealed that the concerned website or social media system (filter) does not broadcast such pictures before analysing a photograph or audio tape on the website or social media.
