Pune: Over 200 Amateurs to Represent 24 Teams at the 5th Edition of Arun Sane Memorial Amateur Tennis League

Pune, 14th December 2024: Over 200 amateur players from Pune will participate in the fifth edition of the Arun Sane Memorial Amateur Tennis League, organized by the PYC Hindu Gymkhana and the Pune Metropolitan District Tennis Association (PMDTA). The tournament will take place on the PYC Hindu Gymkhana tennis courts.
The President of PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Kumar Tamhane, along with Hon. Secretary Deepak Gadgil and Joint Secretary Sarang Lagu, announced that the event is being held in memory of the late Arun Sane, the former president of PMDTA. The tournament follows a unique format where current and former professional players, markers, and coaches are not allowed to participate, ensuring an amateur-only competition.
The league will feature a total prize pool of Rs 50,000. Teams participating include PYC A, MWTA B, FC 4, ODMT Nataraj 2, PYC B, ODMT Nataraj 1, T20, Patriots, Tennisnuts Rogers, FC 3, Tennis Champs, MWTA C, Tennisnuts Rafa, Maharashtra Mandal 1, Court Magicians, Team Chandani Chowk, MWTA A, Super Smashers, Solaris Go Getters, FC 2, FC 1, Solaris Eagles, MWTA D, and PYC C.
The tournament will follow a league-cum-knockout format, with the 24 teams divided into six groups. Each tie between two teams will include three matches: one in the “90+ category” (where the combined age of the doubles partners must exceed 90 years) and two in the Open Doubles category. This format ensures participation across various skill levels and age groups, said Abhishek Tamhane, Tennis Secretary of PYC Hindu Gymkhana. Yash Kale has been appointed as the tournament supervisor.
To ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament, a committee has been formed comprising Sunder Iyer, Abhishek Tamhane, Hemant Bendrey, and Jayant Kadhe.
The Arun Sane Memorial Amateur Tennis League continues to be a platform for promoting amateur tennis in Pune and celebrating the memory of a stalwart who contributed immensely to the sport.
