Camp, 27 March 2021: A massive fire broke out at the famous Fashion Street near MG Road in the Camp area of Pune city on Friday night. Vehicles of Pune Cantonment Fire Station and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Fire Brigade reached the spot and took about three hours to douse the fire.

Fashion Street is one of the most popular shopping street shopping destinations in Pune.

According to officials, the fire is said to have destroyed over 400 shops selling garments, shoes, goggles and other accessories.

After about three hours, the fire was brought under control around 1.30 am Saturday. A total of 20 vehicles and over 50 officers and firemen were involved in the operation to control the fire, informed Pune Fire Brigade chief Prashant Ranpise.

A few years ago, the fire brigade had conducted a fire audit of Fashion Street where shops are located ‘cheek by jowl’ and termed Fashion Street a ‘Fire Hazard‘. Therefore, the Pune cantonment board had launched a campaign against the encroachers. However, traders from Fashion Street had rushed to court against that. So the action was kept on hold. A few months ago, the cantonment board president had inspected Fashion Street and instructed a new fire audit, senior board officials said.

Second incident in 10 days

This is the second fire in the Camp area in ten days. On March 16, a fire at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj market destroyed 25 chicken and fish stalls.
