Wagholi, 11th May 2023: Pune City Police have arrested the owner of mandap godown in Wagholi where three workers died in fire.

The accused, identified as Ashish Sarjit Agarwal, a 40-year-old resident of Bibvewadi, has been charged with culpable homicide for his alleged role in the accident.

The deceased workers have been identified as Bijan Patra (28 years old), Vishwajit Sen (33 years old), and Kamal Brar (29 years old), all hailing from West Bengal.

The incident took place at Agarwal’s godown located in the Ubalenagar area of Wagholi. On the fateful night of May 5, at approximately midnight, twelve workers were having their meal inside the godown when a sudden fire broke out, causing panic among them. Unfortunately, Bijan Patra, Vishwajit Sen, and Kamal Brar were unable to escape and lost their lives in the blaze.

Investigations have revealed that Agarwal had arranged accommodation for the workers in a warehouse room without obtaining the necessary permissions from the fire department, electricity board, building department, and police. Disturbingly, the room lacked any safety measures, thereby highlighting the negligence on Agarwal’s part. As a result, a case was registered against him in relation to the incident.

Assistant Police Inspector Ravindra Godse is leading the ongoing investigation to uncover further details.
