Pimpri Chinchwad, 9th May 2023: Water supply to Pimpri-Chinchwad from Pavana Dam was disrupted today by the agitators who are demanding proper rehabilitation for the people affected by the construction of the dam. The protestors staged a march and locked the office of the Pawna Water Resources Department officials.

They said that the dam was completed in 1973, and around 20 to 25 villages were displaced during its construction. However, in the last 50 years, the government has failed to address the issue of rehabilitating the Pavana dam victims. Out of the 1203 account holders displaced, only 340 have been rehabilitated so far, leaving 863 account holders still awaiting rehabilitation. The court has ruled in favor of the Pavana dam victims, yet the government is not allocating land to the farmers.

The protestors have been holding marches for several years, demanding the rehabilitation of the dam victims, but the government has not taken any action. The farmers of Pavana dam affected and Maval talukas had previously blocked the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in protest against the Pavana project in 2011, resulting in the death of three farmers in police firing and many more injuries. In order to prevent any such incident from occurring again, the Pune Rural Police deployed a large number of police forces in the Pavana area.

Various political leaders, including MLA Sunil Shelke, BJP taluka president Ravindra Bhegde, and NCP taluka president Ganesh Khandge, have supported the protestors’ demands. The protestors are determined not to give any land for any government work in Maval taluka in the future.

Tehsildar of Maval taluka Vikram Deshmukh along with officials of the irrigation department met with the protestors and promised to convey their demands to the government.

The protestors have taken a stand that they will not allow water supply from Pavana Dam until their demands for proper rehabilitation are met. The protestors are demanding the government to take immediate action and fulfill their long-standing demand for proper rehabilitation of Pavana dam victims.
