Pimpri Chinchwad, 2nd September 2023: After a month-long wait, heavy rains finally made their appearance in Pune city and the surrounding district on Saturday morning.

In Pimpri Chinchwad, 83.5 mm of rain had been recorded by 8:30 in the morning, while Lonavla in the district received 105 mm of rainfall. Despite the relief brought by the return of rain, the residents of Pune found themselves grappling with waterlogging and pothole-ridden roads, bringing their lives to a halt.

The heavy downpour commenced in Pune city after midnight on Friday, persisting in many areas until noon on Saturday. The meteorological department attributed this rainfall to localized cloud formation, resulting in moderate to heavy rains in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. The overnight and early morning showers left students and workers rushing to their destinations.

Although the morning deluge subsided in the afternoon, the skies remained overcast throughout the day. The weather department’s forecast indicates that the city and district can expect mainly cloudy conditions for the next two days, with intermittent spells of moderate to light rain.

The monsoon season appears to be gaining momentum across the state, including Pune. Currently, a low-pressure system extends from Vidarbha to Karnataka, while cyclonic conditions persist in the North Bay of Bengal, potentially leading to the formation of another low-pressure area.

As a result, the Meteorological Department anticipates the likelihood of light to moderate rain in numerous locations over the next 48 hours. Additionally, they forecast moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thundershowers in Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha.
