Pune’s Five Lakes Beautification Plan: PMC’s Ambitious Environmental Initiative
Pune, 2nd September 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received official approval to proceed with an ambitious environmental and urban beautification project known as the “PMC Five Lakes Beautification Plan” in Pune.
A recent meeting, presided over by the divisional commissioner, delved into the intricate details of this noteworthy initiative. Madhav Jagtap, the head of the PMC’s environment department, stated, “The civic body is currently in the process of developing a comprehensive plan for the enhancement and beautification of five prominent lakes, including Jambhulwadi, two lakes at Katraj, Pashan, and an additional lake.”
Recent environmental incidents, such as the distressing sight of large quantities of dead fish floating in Jambhulwadi Lake, have underscored the urgency of such an initiative. To address potential hazards, Vikram Kumar, the PMC commissioner, has granted approval for the installation of sewage treatment plants at the upper regions of each of the lakes covered under the PMC’s Five Lakes Beautification Plan in Pune. This strategic move aims to prevent sewage water from directly contaminating the lake water, thereby enhancing the local ecosystems.
Kumar has also instructed officials to take measures to control the growth of hyacinths in these lakes. Tenders have been issued for the removal of this invasive aquatic plant, which can adversely affect local flora and fauna by impeding sunlight and oxygen diffusion.
While previous plans for lake development were proposed, as outlined by Hemant Rasne, the former standing committee chairman, they remained unimplemented due to the disruptive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the PMC’s operations.
The PMC is now eager to forge ahead with its comprehensive action plan, leveraging the current budget and available resources. This project not only seeks to enhance the aesthetic appeal of these lakes but also places a strong emphasis on sustainable development and conservation efforts. Through initiatives of this nature, the PMC aims to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents while safeguarding natural resources for the benefit of future generations.
