Pune: PCMC Employees’ Strike Called Off; Start Work Wearing Black Ribbons

Pimpri, 16th March 2023: The employees of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have started their work by wearing black ribbons for the third day after going on strike for two consecutive days for various demands, including the old pension scheme. After two days, the work of the municipal corporation started smoothly. However, the office bearers of the employees’ federation said that they have started the work by wearing black ribbons.

The employees have gone on an indefinite strike since Tuesday for various demands such as the old pension scheme should be implemented, long-term contract workers should be regularized in service by paying them equal pay, filling up vacant posts in the municipal corporation, and others. As there was no solution to the demands on Tuesday, the indefinite strike continued on Wednesday as well. Employees with old pensions also participated in the strike. The two-day strike received a spontaneous response. Municipality and ward offices were completely closed. The work of the municipal corporation was stopped.

The old pension scheme applies to the officers and employees who joined the municipal service before 1st November 2005. Such officers and employees should join work immediately.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh ordered that the Head of the Department should give orders to the employees covered by the old pension scheme in his department to join the work.

Commissioner Singh had warned that if they do not join the work, they will be eligible for disciplinary action. This led to a split among the employees.

Employees with pre-2005 old pensions have taken the stand to report to work. Accordingly, all officers and employees started working today. The employees have started working wearing black ribbons. After two days, the work of the municipal corporation has returned to normal.
