New Delhi, 16th March 2023: Road and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that the Government of India and the World Bank have signed a contract for the construction of the Green National Highway Corridors Project (GNHCP) with a total length of 781 km in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
It will be done using a loan of $500 million from the World Bank, with a total project cost of US$1288.24 million (7,662.47 crores).
The project’s goal is to demonstrate safe and environmentally friendly highways while taking climate resilience and the use of green technologies into consideration.
To do this, provisions for natural resource conservation will be incorporated using cement-treated sub-base/reclaimed asphalt pavement, the use of local/marginal materials like lime, fly ash, and waste plastic, and bio-engineering measures for slope protection like hydroseeding, coco/jute fiber, among other things.
