Pune: PCMC Lifts Ban on Private RO Plants with Strict Conditions

Pimpri, 22nd February 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to lift restrictions on 58 private reverse osmosis (RO) plants that were previously shut down following the detection of gastroenteritis (GBS) cases in certain areas. The municipal authorities have allowed these plants to resume operations, provided they comply with strict terms and conditions to ensure the supply of safe drinking water.
Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh has issued an official order outlining the necessary compliance framework for private RO plant operators.
As per the new guidelines, private RO plant operators must:
Register with PCMC – Operators must submit an application to the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) of the concerned ward along with necessary documents.
Regular Maintenance – The entire RO plant must undergo maintenance or repairs by the original manufacturing company or an authorized repair service. A certificate confirming the maintenance must be obtained every six months, along with geo-tagged photographs as proof.
Water Purity Certification – RO plant operators must secure a certificate from the manufacturer or repair company, ensuring the plant meets IS-10500 (2012) and WHO standards for purified water.
Monthly Water Testing – Water quality from the RO plant must be tested every month at the State Public Health Laboratory, Pune, or the PCMC Laboratory. The test report must be submitted to the respective ward office.
Regularization of Water Supply – If PCMC’s water supply is being used for the RO plant, operators must regularize the connection and pay non-domestic water tariffs as per meter readings. Failure to do so will lead to permanent closure of the plant.
Ensuring Safe Drinking Water for Citizens
PCMC’s decision to lift the ban on private RO plants comes as a relief to residents facing drinking water shortages. However, authorities have made it clear that operators must adhere to all prescribed norms before resuming operations.
“The goal is to provide clean and safe water to the citizens. RO plant owners must strictly follow PCMC’s regulations and obtain official permission before restarting operations,” said Pramod Ombhase, Chief Engineer, Water Supply Department, PCMC.
This move aims to strike a balance between public health safety and ensuring access to purified drinking water for the residents of Pimpri Chinchwad.
