Punawale, 27th October 2023: On behalf of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), plans are underway to secure 23 hectares of land designated for a waste depot in Punawale. In exchange, the Forest Department is in the final stages of purchasing 23 hectares of private land adjacent to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh confirmed that the PCMC aims to complete the acquisition of the waste depot location by the end of December.

Every day, Pimpri-Chinchwad city accumulates 1200 tonnes of wet and dry waste. This waste is currently collected and deposited in the 81-acre waste depot in Moshi, where a project converts wet waste into fertilizer and recently initiated a power generation project using dry waste. Additionally, fuel is produced from plastic waste. The Moshi depot, in operation since 1991, is nearing its capacity limits.

Recognizing the need to accommodate the increasing urbanization, the Municipal Corporation initially aimed to acquire 23 hectares of land from the Forest Department in Punavale back in 2008. However, the process of taking over the designated land has faced delays.

In exchange for the Punawale land, the municipality had planned to offer an alternative site in Mulshi to the Forest Department. However, the forest department rejected this option due to the presence of gravelly soil in that location.

The Forest Department then suggested private land adjacent to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district. The Municipal Corporation has commenced the process of acquiring approximately 23 hectares of land through the Chandrapur Collectorate.

For this acquisition, the PCMC has already paid five lakh 34 thousand rupees for seat counting, with a total payment of ten crore rupees for the land in the works. Once the land purchase process is completed, it will facilitate the establishment of a waste depot with a modern waste processing system. Commissioner Singh is confident that this initiative will prevent the accumulation of garbage heaps in the area.
