Pune: PCMC to Honour Krantisurya Mahatma Jyotirao Phule with Educational Programs

Pimpri, 25th November 2023: On the commemoration of Krantisurya Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s memorial day, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has organized a series of educational programs to celebrate the life and contributions of this pioneering social reformer. Recognized for establishing the first girls’ school in Pune and empowering his wife, Savitribai Phule, as the first female teacher, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s legacy is being remembered and honoured through these events.

The programs are set to take place on the 28th of November, 2022, at the grounds near the statue of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in Pimpri Chowk. The day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Krantisurya Mahatma Jotirao Phule at 10:00 am, led by Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh. Following this, Commissioner Singh will inaugurate the Prabodhan Festival at 10:15 am.

The event features an array of cultural and educational activities, including a one-act play by actor Somnath Mutkule portraying the life of Krantisurya Jotirao Phule at 10:30 am. A Powada performance by Shahir Bapu Pawar is scheduled for noon, followed by a musical program by Sadhana Meshram at 1:30 pm.

A seminar on the topic “Mahatma Phule and Social Enlightenment Movement” is set to take place at 3:30 pm, featuring esteemed speakers such as Laxmikant Deshmukh, Gangadhar Banbare, Javed Pasha, Dr. Pradeep Awte, and Professor Dilip Chavan.

An “enlightening cultural Jalsa” by folk artist Meera Umap and colleagues is slated for 5:30 pm, followed by the play “Thirdiya Ratna” written by Krantisurya Mahatma Jotirao Phule at 7 pm. Actor and singer Anirudh Vankar serves as the producer and director of the play.

The Municipal Corporation has issued an appeal for citizens to attend these programs in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of honouring and preserving the teachings of Krantisurya Mahatma Jotirao Phule.
