Pune: PCMC Urges Citizens to Conserve Water as Delayed Monsoon Raises Concerns Over Water Availability
Pune, 16th June 2026 : Citing the delayed arrival of the monsoon due to the impact of El Niño and increasing pressure on available water resources, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) CommissionerVijay Suryawanshi on Tuesday appealed to citizens to adopt water conservation measures and use water sparingly.
The appeal comes amid concerns that a delayed monsoon could put additional stress on the city’s water reserves. The civic body’s water supply department has urged residents, housing societies, commercial establishments, educational institutions and industries to implement water-saving measures and ensure rainwater harvesting systems remain operational.
Citizens have been advised to avoid washing vehicles with potable water, while commercial vehicle washing centres have been asked to use water recycling systems. The administration has also urged private and public swimming pools to avoid refilling with fresh water wherever possible.
The PCMC has called for immediate repairs of leakages in flush tanks, taps, pipelines and other water supply systems in homes and commercial establishments. Residents have also been encouraged to install aerators on taps and use water-efficient fixtures to reduce consumption.
Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase said efficient use of available water resources and implementation of conservation measures at every level were essential to ensure long-term water availability. He urged citizens to prevent leakages, use aerators, avoid using tap water for vehicle washing and keep rainwater harvesting systems functional.
Executive Engineer Mahesh Baride said water conservation was a collective responsibility and not merely that of the administration. He appealed to housing societies, commercial establishments, educational institutions and industries to regularly review water consumption, increase water reuse and maintain rainwater harvesting systems.
The civic body has also asked housing societies, commercial complexes, hospitals, educational institutions and industries to inspect, clean and maintain their rainwater harvesting systems to ensure maximum groundwater recharge during the monsoon. Citizens have been urged to avoid wastage of water through unnecessary washing of roads, footpaths, premises and vehicles, excessive watering of gardens and overflow from overhead tanks.
Mayor Ravi Landge said, “Water is not merely a natural resource but a priceless treasure for future generations. Due to the impact of El Niño, the rainfall period is becoming uncertain and this may affect water availability. To overcome challenges such as water scarcity, every citizen must adopt water-saving habits in daily life. Avoiding vehicle washing, preventing unnecessary use of water, harvesting rainwater and participating in water conservation initiatives are the needs of the hour. If the citizens of Pimpri Chinchwad take the initiative as responsible residents, the city can become a model of sustainable water management.”
Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi said, “This year, due to the impact of El Niño, the arrival of rainfall has been delayed beyond expectations, which may create additional pressure on water reserves. Considering the growing population, climate change and increasing stress on water resources, every citizen must accept responsibility for water conservation. The water saved today will prove invaluable for future generations. Therefore, conserve water, save water and participate in water conservation initiatives.”
