Pune/Pimpri Chinchwad, 15th December 2025: The Maharashtra government on Sunday evening cleared a major expansion of policing infrastructure in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, approving new police stations, additional zones, and senior officer posts to strengthen law enforcement amid rapid urban growth.

In Pune city, the government sanctioned five new police stations at Narhe, Laxminagar, Yewalewadi, Manjari and Lohgaon. It also approved the creation of two new police zones—Zone VI and Zone VII—resulting in the addition of two deputy commissioners of police (DCPs). With this expansion, Pune city will now have a total of 45 police stations, including the cyber police station. Officials said the final territorial demarcation will be notified shortly.

The new police stations will be formed by reorganising existing jurisdictions. Narhe police station will be carved out of Sinhagad Road police station, Laxminagar from Yerawada, Manjari from Hadapsar, Lohgaon from Airport police station, and Yewalewadi from parts of Kondhwa and Bharati Vidyapeeth police stations.

As per the revised structure, Zone VI will comprise Hadapsar, Kalepadal, Mundhwa, Phursungi, Manjari and Lonikalbhor police stations, while Zone VII will include Lonikand, Wagholi, Lohgaon, Airport, Kharadi and Chandannagar police stations.

Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said the proposal was submitted keeping the city’s expansion in mind. “We sought new police stations and zones considering Pune’s future growth. Along with the two new zones and DCP posts, around 850 police personnel have been sanctioned to staff these units. Once operational, this will significantly improve policing on the ground,” he said.

He added that the restructuring would ease the workload on existing zones. “Earlier, Zones IV and V were handling a very large number of police stations. With the creation of new zones, police stations will be more evenly distributed, allowing for better supervision and monitoring,” Kumar said.

The state government also approved similar measures for Pimpri Chinchwad, sanctioning two new police stations and one additional police zone. Along with this, posts of three DCPs and six assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) have been cleared for the twin cities.

Police officials said the proposal for new stations was aimed at addressing rising crime, particularly in industrial areas. Two new police stations will be set up in the Chakan region—Chakan South, carved out of the existing Alandi and Chakan police stations, and North Mahalunge, which will be formed from the Mahalunge MIDC jurisdiction.

Currently, the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate has 23 police stations, including a cyber police station. With the addition of the two new stations, the total will increase to 25.

The government has also approved the creation of a fourth zone in Pimpri Chinchwad. Under the revised arrangement, Zone I will include Nigdi, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Sant Tukaramnagar, Dapodi and Sangvi police stations. Zone II will cover Hinjewadi, Bavdhan, Ravet, Wakad and Kalewadi. Zone III will consist of Bhosari MIDC, Bhosari, Dighi, Chakan, South Chakan and Alandi, while Zone IV will include Shirgaon, Dehu Road, Talegaon Dabhade, Talegaon MIDC, Mahalunge MIDC and North Mahalunge MIDC police stations.

Officials said the expansion is expected to improve response times, enhance supervision and ensure more focused policing across fast-growing residential and industrial pockets.
