Pimpri-Chinchwad has experienced significant urbanization over the past two decades, with the population rising from 17 lakhs in 2011 to 25 lakhs at present. This number is projected to reach 30 lakhs by 2028 and 39 lakhs by 2038. Considering the growing population and the demand for improved transportation infrastructure, citizens from Akurdi, Chinchwad, and Nigdi areas have been advocating for the extension of the metro line.

A revised project report (DPR) has already been submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Civil Affairs on 25th February 2022, outlining the proposed extension’s route and estimated cost of Rs 910 crore. The central government and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will equally share the expenses for the extended metro route.

The proposed route spans four kilometers, and if approved promptly, the work up to Nigdi can be completed within the set timeframe. Minister Puri’s commitment to approving the proposal within seven days has left MP Barne optimistic, stating that the dream of a metro line running till Nigdi will soon be fulfilled.
