Pune 20th August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation has acquired land at 16 out of 21 required places to carry out road widening for the development of Ganeshkhind Road.

According to the officials, the current road width on Ganeshkhind Road is 36 meters, while the proposed road width as part of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s development plan is 45 meters. The central portion of the road, spanning 11.00 meters between Vidyapeeth Chowk and Senapati Bapat Chowk, as well as 9.00 meters between Senapati Bapat Chowk and Shivajinagar, will be barricaded for the ongoing Metro work and the proposed Double Decker flyover construction. Due to this only 2 to 2.5 lanes will remain available for the traffic movement from the current 36.00 meters of road.

According to officials, the current width of the road is likely to cause heavy traffic jam on the Ganeshkhind Road during the peak hours. Due to this, the construction of double decker flyover will only be possible after widening of 250 meter long road between Senapati Bapat Chowk and Pune University Chowk.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced the immediate commencement of works related to Metro, flyover construction, and road widening. This includes expediting the land acquisition process. Around 21 spots along the road, including 16 spots already acquired, are crucial for road widening. Some of these spaces are reserved for governmental institutions, power distribution companies, and a branch of RBI.

The senior officer in charge of development, Vikas Dhakane, has communicated that orders have been issued to the Public Works Department for removing encroachments on the road and providing temporary alternative routes to motorists.
