Pune, 20th December 2024: It has been decided to allocate 20 plots of land in villages within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits for the construction of water tanks. The amenity spaces in these villages have already been acquired, and the plots will be used for building water tanks. Once the tanks are completed, they will be able to store approximately 3.5 lakh litres of water, which will help resolve water supply issues in the surrounding areas.

A total of 34 villages are now part of the PMC limits. Of these, 11 villages were included in 2017, and 23 more joined in 2021. However, the Maharashtra State Government has decided to exclude two villages, Phursungi and Uruli Devachi, issuing an ordinance to this effect. As a result, the number of villages within PMC limits is currently 32.

Water is currently supplied to these villages through available sources and tankers. To ensure that these villages receive a consistent water supply similar to other areas within the corporation, PMC has begun preparing a water supply scheme. Work on the water supply scheme has already started in Wagholi, Lohgaon, Sus, Mhalunge, and Bavdhan.

The Water Supply Department had requested land from PMC for constructing water tanks. Following a meeting at PMC, it was decided to allocate land in eight villages for this purpose. The tanks will be built on these plots by the Water Supply Department. The selected villages include Ambegaon Khurd, Ambegaon Budruk, Sus, Mhalunge, Bavdhan, Jambhulwadi, Lohgaon, and Wagholi. Once the land is transferred to the Water Supply Department, all necessary procedures will be completed, and construction of the tanks will begin.

Nandkishore Jagtap, in charge of the Water Supply Department, explained that PMC has developed plans to ensure adequate water supply to the included villages. Work on some water supply schemes is already underway. In areas where water supply is provided, it is essential to build water tanks with a capacity to store one-third of the total water supply. The decision to provide 20 plots for tank construction will greatly benefit the water supply in these villages.
