Pune, 5th March 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has prioritised road infrastructure and traffic planning in its budget for the financial year 2025-26, allocating a record ₹2,000 crore to these sectors. The move is expected to provide much-needed relief to citizens by expediting critical road and traffic improvement projects.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale presented the ₹12,618 crore budget before the Standing Committee, emphasizing the need for improved connectivity and congestion management. Last year, PMC had announced the development of 33 missing link roads as part of the city’s development plan. However, work has commenced on only three of them. The new budget includes funds for land acquisition to accelerate these projects.

In an effort to ease traffic congestion, PMC has identified 33 key roads with heavy traffic flow. While work has already begun on 15 of them in the first phase, the remaining 18 roads will be taken up next. The improvements will include road widening, pedestrian safety measures, better directional signage, and divider markings.

Additionally, major roads, flyovers, and grade separators will be developed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Some of the key projects include flyovers and roadworks in Baner, Kondhwa, and Mohammadwadi. Ongoing works such as the Bibvewadi flyover at Gangadham Chowk and the Kharadi river bridge are being constructed under this model.

The flyover at Rajaram Bridge Chowk on Sinhagad Road has already been completed and is now open to traffic. Other flyovers, including the one from Vitthalwadi to Funtime Cinema and Indian Hume Pipe Company Gate to Inamdar Chowk, are nearing completion, with the latter expected to be ready by May 2025. Meanwhile, the flyover connecting Suncity to Karve Nagar is set to be completed by July 2025, significantly reducing congestion on Sinhagad Road.

PMC is also supporting Pune Metro’s expansion by allocating ₹40 crore for land acquisition. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the underground metro line from Swargate to Katraj has been submitted to the state and central governments for approval.

Apart from transport infrastructure, the budget also prioritizes environmental initiatives. A ₹270 crore allocation has been made for the River Rejuvenation Project, which includes riverbank development and the construction of riverbank roads under the PPP model. Additionally, funds have been set aside for structural audits of bridges over the river to ensure safety.
