Pune: PMC Appeals Citizens To Propose Works For The Upcoming Annual Budget, Voting To Remain Open Till August 31
Pune 8th August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a unique initiative ‘Participatory Budgeting ‘ to involve citizens in preparing annual budget of the civic body. The initiative aims to collect information about various proposals related to civic works of the different parts of the city from citizens which can be accommodated in the upcoming annual budget.
“Participatory Budgeting is an empowering mechanism which allows citizens to recommend useful and impactful civic works in their respective wards and neighbourhoods” as the initiative is defined by the PMC on its website.
Under this initiative the citizens can propose works regarding various departments of the civic body including Water Supply, Road, Electricity, Sewage Department, Slum Rehabilitation etc. by registering their vote using a dedicated website. For each recommended work, a maximum fund limit of Rs 5 lakh has been set.
The civic body has appealed citizens to inform about specific works that are necessary in their areas and can be completed at a ward level. They should not demand for works for a whole city. The recommended works will be subjected to the scrutiny and legal matters and they will be finalised only after a detailed discussion with the citizen groups of the city, as stated by PMC on its website. A detailed information of the recommended work and pictures wherever possible shall be submitted by the citizens.
The votes from citizens will be collaborated by the PMC officials and they will be considered while preparing the upcoming annual budget. The voting will remain active till August 31 for the citizens.
According to officials, only works regarding roads (only resurfacing), sidewalks, water supply, gutters, bus stops (as per PMPML’s recommendation), buildings (only repairs), public toilets, street lighting (roads and traffic signals), electricity, (only repairs), only such works will be included in this initiative.
Works such as footbridge (deemed illegal by the Supreme Court), Speed Breakers (new construction), construction on Pune Municipal Corporation-owned vacant plots will not be included.
