Pune, 29th September 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner, Vikram Kumar, has approved 250 locations around the city to act as parking and charging stations for the upcoming electric bikes (e-bikes) services which are set to begin soon.

During the pilot phase, approximately 5,000 e-bikes will be available for rent at a rate of Rs 4 per km to citizens. The PMC will lease its land to establish charging/swapping stations and parking spaces identified by the civic administration, while the private agency will be responsible for constructing all necessary infrastructure and ensuring safety measures.

In 2017, the PMC launched a public cycle share scheme. It was suspended in 2020 after three private players ceased operations citing technical issues. A lack of infrastructure and security were major reasons for the scheme’s withdrawal.

VG Kulkarni, chief of PMC’s road department said that they had identified around 900 locations across the city for parking during the bicycle sharing scheme. Out of which, 500 locations were discussed for the e-bike project. The private agency has okayed 250 locations out of 500.
