Pune, 17th January 2025: Amid rising complaints of private hospitals flouting regulations, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Health Department has launched an inspection campaign. Over the past week, the department inspected 135 private hospitals in the city, issuing notices to seven for failing to adhere to prescribed norms.

The inspection drive targets all private hospitals engaged in medical practice with at least one operational bed. Facilities across various branches, including Allopathy, AYUSH, Unani, and Naturopathy, are under scrutiny. However, day care centers, where patients are not admitted for 24 hours, are exempt from the inspections.

A dedicated three-member team at each of the city’s 15 ward offices—comprising a ward health officer, a nurse, and a staff member—has been tasked with the inspections. The checks aim to ensure compliance with the Bombay Nursing Home Act and include verifying:
– Proper hospital registration
– Adequate staffing of doctors and nurses as per norms
– Display of treatment rate sheets in public areas
– Availability of a no-objection certificate from the Fire Brigade
– Proper disposal of biomedical waste

Assistant Health Officer Dr. Suryakant Deokar emphasized the significance of the campaign, noting that violations include the absence of treatment price lists in public areas and non-compliance with patient rights codes. Notices have been issued to seven hospitals found in breach of these rules.

“The PMC is committed to ensuring that private hospitals operate within the regulatory framework to safeguard patient rights and maintain healthcare standards,” Dr. Deokar stated.
