Pune: PMC Launches Phase 2 of Ganeshkhind Road Widening to Address Core Traffic Woes

Pune, 10th June 2025: In a major step toward easing traffic congestion in central Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated Phase 2 of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project. The latest phase targets the two-kilometre stretch between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Sancheti Hospital, a known traffic chokepoint in the city.
This development follows the successful completion of Phase 1, which widened the one-kilometre section from Pune University Chowk to the RBI building. Executed in collaboration with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the first phase was critical to accommodating the double-decker flyover being constructed for Pune Metro Line 3.
Land Acquisition Still Underway
Phase 2 requires the acquisition of land from 52 properties. However, as of now, only 12 property owners have officially transferred their land to PMC. Prominent institutions yet to complete the process include:
Agriculture College
Rahul Theatre
Shivajinagar Police Headquarters and Chowky
CoEP Hostel
Hardikar Hospital
LIC Building
Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education
PMC’s land and estate department is in active negotiations with these stakeholders to fast-track the acquisition.
Budget and Project Scope
The civil works for this phase are estimated to cost ₹58 crore, excluding land acquisition costs, which are being assessed separately.
Ganeshkhind Road is a vital arterial corridor that links major city hubs including Pune University, Shivajinagar, and the Pune Railway Station. The road-widening project is designed to enhance connectivity and complement the PMRDA’s elevated double-decker flyover, which features separate levels for metro trains and vehicular traffic.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to significantly decongest traffic and streamline integration between road and metro networks in the city’s core areas.
