Pune: PMC Mandates Leak-Free Tankers to Prevent Slippery Roads and Accidents in Pune

Pune, 30th December 2024: Roads are becoming slippery due to water leakage from tankers, leading to accidents. To address this issue, tanker drivers are required to cover their tankers and stop water leakage. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has warned that tankers with leaks will not be allowed to fill water at PMC tanker filling centres.
The uneven water supply in Pune city often leads to shortages, prompting citizens to rely on tankers for drinking water. To meet this demand, PMC has established tanker filling centres at various locations. Tankers are filled after payment of the required challan. However, water frequently spills from these tankers onto city roads. Combined with oil leaks from vehicles, this creates dangerously slippery conditions. Bike riders, in particular, are at risk, often falling on these wet roads and sustaining serious injuries.
The issue arises because tanker drivers fail to secure the lids on tankers or ignore leaks from the taps. In response, the PMC has implemented strict regulations. According to Nandkishore Jagtap, head of PMC’s Water Supply Department, tankers must have proper lids and no leaks to be eligible for water filling. Even with a valid invoice, tankers that do not comply will be denied service.
Recognising the importance of tanker services, PMC has given drivers a month to comply with the new rules. This decision will be enforced strictly starting January 15.
