Pune, 29th April 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has revealed that 41 educational institutions across the city have defaulted on property tax payments amounting to ₹369 crore. Of this staggering amount, Sinhgad Institute alone accounts for ₹258.99 crore, making it the largest defaulter among them, according to information provided by civic officials.

State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil recently conducted a review meeting focused on property tax recovery, pending infrastructure works, and other civic matters in the Kothrud Assembly constituency. During this meeting, workers from Sinhgad Institute, accompanied by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) representatives, approached Minister Patil to highlight their plight. They reported severe financial distress due to unpaid salaries and urged that PMC auction the institute’s properties so that proceeds could be used to clear salary arrears. The issue prompted an extended discussion during the session.

According to PMC data, Sinhgad Institute owns around 128 properties across various parts of Pune. The base property tax dues stand at ₹78.33 crore, while penalties for delayed payment have escalated the amount to ₹280.66 crore. As there are no court-issued stay orders against action, PMC has already sealed several properties, including Sinhgad’s administrative offices.

Additionally, the municipal administration reviewed the outstanding dues of other educational institutions during the meeting. While the Sinhgad employees sought state intervention over unpaid wages, PMC clarified that it has no direct role in the institute’s internal financial matters. Officials also pointed out that some of the seized properties may have existing bank loans, which could complicate future auction proceedings.

Despite the meeting between Minister Patil and the employees, PMC reiterated that its actions are solely directed at tax recovery and not involved in employment or salary issues within private institutions.
