Pune: PMC Serves Notice to Poona Hospital Over Delay In Handing Dead Body of Patient

Pune, 28th April 2025: In a significant development, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an official notice to Poona Hospital and Research Centre regarding the complaint about the death of Mahesh Pathak and the alleged mishandling of his body. The notice acknowledges the complaint and states that if the allegations are true, the hospital’s actions violate PMC rules.
The civic body has demanded a factual report, including doctors’ statements, to be submitted within 24 hours to the PMC Health Department. This directive comes under the orders of Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nina Borade and Assistant Medical Officer of Health Dr. Suryakant Devkar.
The notice follows a complaint filed by Nilesh Sharad Mahajan, who alleged that Poona Hospital withheld the body of his brother-in-law, Mahesh Pathak, for over eight hours after his death on 21st April due to unpaid bills under the Urban Poor Medical Assistance Scheme.
The family was reportedly told that billing could only be processed in the morning, delaying the release of the body until 9:30 AM despite the death occurring around 1:30 AM. The hospital administration, however, denied wrongdoing, claiming the relatives had agreed to wait until morning for the body’s release.
