Pune, 24th April 2025: In a bid to safeguard natural water bodies in the 32 villages recently merged into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, the civic body has launched a focused drive to protect bunds and lakes from growing encroachments. The initiative is being led by the PMC’s Water Supply and Environment Department, following directives from the civic administration.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. said the initiative follows a letter from the District Council urging the PMC to take over and preserve these critical water sources. A meeting was held recently to chalk out the pre-monsoon action plan, with responsibilities assigned to relevant departments.

“As part of the infrastructure development in merged areas, beautification work has already begun at lakes in Pashan, Model Colony, and Katraj under the Swachh Survekshan campaign. The Standing Committee has approved funding, and work is currently underway at two lakes. We plan to secure an additional 25 to 30 lakes and bunds in the near future,” said Prithviraj B.P.

He added that the PMC is in the process of officially demarcating lake boundaries to prevent further encroachments. “Illegal construction has already begun on government lands and around water bodies in some areas. By marking boundaries and taking control of these spaces, we aim to preserve natural water flow and prevent future encroachments.”

The Zilla Parishad’s Chief Executive Officer had earlier written to the PMC, requesting formal acquisition of lands encompassing percolation lakes and bunds in the newly merged villages. The letter also called for the removal of existing encroachments. In response, the PMC has assigned the Water Supply and Environment Department to take the lead in implementing these measures.
