Pune, 10th October 2022: On Saturday, the city body reversed course and decided to move the digital selfie sites obstructing traffic movement to new locations and remove only the illegal ones rather than all of them.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Additional Commissioner Kunal Khemnar claimed, “Public money was used by the civic government to purchase these. Thus, not all of them will be eliminated. The PMC will reposition these selfie-taking locations so they do not interfere with traffic flow.” Following reports of vandalism from locals and civic activists on 28th September, the municipal commissioner had earlier declared that all selfie sites within the city limits would be eliminated. These boards, according to commuters, were also contributing to traffic issues.

“Some of them are situated close to traffic lights or at the road dividers. There are more than two selfie sites in some places. They are defacing the city in addition to intruding on space,” claimed a local indignantly. There were also allegations that power was unlawfully removed from the energy boards installed for street lights to power these selfie locations. Another local added, “This is not only generating power disruptions but also posing a threat of electrocution.”

Civic activists have called for the destruction of these points as well as the reimbursement of the funds used to build them. However, a senior PMC representative stated, “At the ward office level, approvals were granted and due process was followed. Thus, it will not be proper to remove them.” Officials from PMC claimed that each installation cost around Rs. 10 lakh.
