Pune Municipal Corporation May Soon Halt Cremations In Vaikunth After 6 PM

Pune, 10th October 2022: To cut down on air pollution, the civic administration is considering banning cremations at the Vaikunth crematorium, situated in the middle of the city, after 6 pm.
The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute’s suggestions served as the basis for the decision. Numerous locals who live close to the cremation in Navi Peth have expressed concern about the facility’s smoke and the potential health risks it poses. Although the Pune Municipal Corporation has installed 24 crematoriums throughout the city, both electrical and gas-operated, the crematorium manages about 70% of cremations. These additional capabilities are barely used.
Along with encouraging residents to utilise alternative crematoriums, the PMC’s electrical and health departments are working on a proposal to alter the schedules. “The decision to cease cremations has not yet been made in its entirety. The concept is currently under main debate,” said Shrinivas Kandul, director of electrical engineering at PMC.
The Vaikunth facility’s surrounding residential and business buildings have sensors installed by the PMC to monitor the air quality. It will check for the presence of airborne contaminants like carbon, nitrogen, and sulphate particles. Residents have complained about the smoke and ash, although PMC claims it utilises environmentally acceptable techniques to cremate the dead, including white coal.
In addition to non-Covid fatalities, the city has documented at least 10 to 15 coronavirus-related deaths per day over the past two years. 80 Covid deaths per day were recorded at the pandemic’s height. Throughout the first two phases of the pandemic, PMC had designated the Kailash crematorium as a place for Covid fatalities. But as of April 2021, cremations were permitted in all facilities.
