Pune: PMC To Lodge Police Complaint Against STP Water Supplier In Kharadi’s Nyati Elysia Society

Kharadi, 26th December 2024: A day after reports surfaced about the severe health crisis in Nyati Elysia society, Kharadi, where contaminated water allegedly sourced from a sewage treatment plant (STP) was supplied to residents, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has vowed to take stringent action against the responsible tanker vendor.
Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the PMC Water Supply Department, issued a strong statement on Thursday, emphasizing that the Municipal Corporation will not tolerate actions that endanger public health. “We are collecting sufficient evidence in this case. A formal complaint will be registered against the tanker driver, and if the supplier has a registration with the Municipal Corporation, it will be immediately revoked. Playing with the health of citizens in such a manner is unacceptable,” Jagtap said.
The controversy erupted after residents of Nyati Elysia discovered that the water supplied to their homes over the past three months was untreated water sourced from an STP. This led to widespread health issues, with over 80% of residents reportedly suffering from illnesses such as diarrhea, stomach infections, and fever.
The private tanker vendor admitted to the malpractice during a Zoom meeting with residents and the builder earlier this month but continued operations, leading to heightened outrage. The society eventually terminated his contract, but not before the vendor obstructed the water entry point with tankers on December 20, forcing residents to call the police for intervention.
PMC officials visited the society and assured residents that action will be taken.
While residents welcomed PMC’s proactive approach, they emphasized the need for faster implementation of the promised measures.
The residents have also requested a broader investigation to ensure other housing societies in Kharadi are not facing similar issues.
