Pune, October 22, 2020: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started to sell 34 acres of amenity spaces in the city, covering as many as 118 plots in order to generate almost Rs 500 crores through this process. This decision of PMC has not gone down well with Puneites who have started an online campaign ‘Save Civic Amenity Spaces of Pune’, bashing the civic administration’s decision.

“Amenity spaces are public property and are meant for creating the public infrastructure for the citizens. Pune needs more amenity spaces for various essential utilities and amenities are to be built by PMC and Government authorities for the development of the area, providing required infrastructure, and for the welfare and healthcare of citizens,” stated the petition submitted by We core group.

“Pune city is currently facing severe problems, lakhs of citizens face issues related to garbage, healthcare, air pollution, flooding, water supply, traffic, parking, electricity supply, encroachments, illegal constructions, lack of open spaces, lack of recreational spaces etc. Instead of addressing these critical issues by using amenity spaces for the creation of public infrastructure, the PMC is trying to sell them off to builders,” states the petition on change.org.

“I don’t know the party’s stand yet, I will discuss the matter with senior party members and will give out my opinion”, Shivajinagar MLA Siddhant Shirole told Punekarnews.in

Clarifying on order, the civic administration has claimed that even if the land is sold, the development rules will be maintained as per the Development control rules.

Meanwhile, a huge number of spaces have been sold in Baner, Balewadi, Pashan and Kharadi areas of the city. Speaking to Punekarnews.in, President of Aundh-Baner-Pashan housing societies, said,”amenity spaces are the property of citizens, we have paid taxes to help PMC develop these spaces. For the last ten years, we have been volunteering to get parks, playgrounds, better fire systems, waste management policies, but this decision is inconsiderate.”
