Mangalwar Peth, 16th December 2023: To alleviate persistent traffic jams in the Juna Bazar area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to implement new measures. The plan involves reserving roadside seating for businesses, erecting barricades along the main road, and taking strict action against illegally parked vehicles. The initiative aims to create separate lanes for traffic on both sides of the road, enhancing the flow and reducing congestion.

A site inspection was conducted with the presence of Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne, Head of Road Department Aniruddha Pawaskar, Deputy Commissioner of Encroachment/Illegal Construction Removal Department Madhav Jagtap, Executive Engineer Sahebrao Dandge, and local Traffic and Police Officers. The decision to implement these measures was made after thorough discussions and consultations with professionals.

The central part of the city, connecting to various crucial locations such as the RTO Pune, Sassoon General Hospital, Collector Office Pune, Pune Junction Railway Station, Pune Cantonment, CP Office Pune, and major Private Hospitals, witnesses severe traffic congestion, especially on Sundays and Wednesdays. Over 300 businesses occupy the left side of the road, and with furniture and material shops on the right side, traffic is often limited to a single lane, leading to continuous jams.

The key elements of the proposed plan include:

1. Reserve one lane for businesses to facilitate smooth operations.
2. Erecting barricades on both sides of the main road.
3. Closing broken dividers on the main road.
4. Taking strict action against vehicles parked on the road throughout the day.
5. Allocating fixed spaces for professionals operating in the Juna Bazar area.

PMC Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne stated, “Fixed space will be allotted to those doing business at the Juna Bazar. Barricading will be done. Broken dividers will be closed. Apart from this, the lanes of the zebra crossing will be redesigned. A total of two lanes, one on the left side of the road and one on the right side will be available for traffic. Action will be taken by the traffic police on illegally parked vehicles.”
