Pune, 8th June 2025: In a renewed push to improve commuter experience and boost ridership, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) Chairperson Deepa Mudhol-Munde has directed depot officials to ensure timely bus departures and minimize breakdowns during service.

The instruction comes amid rising complaints from passengers about buses breaking down mid-route, causing delays and disruptions. “Depot heads must prioritize preventive maintenance and strictly adhere to scheduled departures,” Mudhol-Munde said during a recent performance review meeting.

PMPML operates across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the PMRDA region, with over 1,500 CNG and electric buses on 381 routes. Although the transport body recently revised its fare structure—leading to a revenue boost—it now faces the challenge of retaining commuters despite the hike.

“To justify the fare increase and encourage more people to use public transport, our focus must be on dependable service and increased occupancy,” the chairperson emphasized. “Every bus must be road-ready before leaving the depot. Raising ridership is equally important.”

Despite a current average daily ridership of around 13.5 lakh, PMPML officials are aiming to increase it to 14–15 lakh in the coming months. However, inconsistent service and frequent mechanical issues have undermined public trust, making reliability a top priority.

To meet its ridership targets, PMPML is working on strengthening maintenance protocols, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring quick turnaround times for repairs. Timely departures, particularly during peak hours, are expected to play a crucial role in drawing and retaining commuters.

As the effects of the fare hike begin to unfold, PMPML will closely monitor next month’s ridership figures to assess the success of these measures. With effective execution and operational discipline, the agency hopes to restore passenger confidence and reinforce its position as the city’s primary mode of public transport. rds.
