Pune, 23rd June 2025: Following a fare hike implemented on June 1, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has recorded a noticeable increase in daily Revenue, but at the cost of a drop in average ridership. Official data reveals that PMPML is now earning significantly more, even as over 15,000 commuters have opted out of daily travel.

Before the hike, in May, PMPML recorded an average daily ridership of 10.14 lakh passengers, with a revenue of ₹1.42 crore. In the two weeks following the fare increase, from June 1 to 15, the average ridership dropped to 9.99 lakh, while daily revenue jumped to ₹2.11 crore, indicating a clear revenue gain despite a dip in commuters.

The fare hike, rolled out in five stages, affects all 392 PMPML routes operating across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

However, the fare adjustment has sparked public criticism. Sanjay Shitole of the PMP Passenger Forum alleged that PMPML lacks precise tools for tracking ridership. He said, “Before implementing the hike, PMPML should have first improved service planning. In several areas, passengers are charged ₹20 for journeys of less than 5 km. Despite complaints, no corrective measures have been taken.”

In response, PMPML officials stated that the administration is working on multiple fronts to improve service quality. “Special buses for women passengers, coordination with the police for security, and other initiatives are being implemented,” said Satish Gawhane, Executive Manager (Operations), PMPML. He added that although fleet shortages have temporarily impacted capacity, upcoming additions to the bus fleet will likely boost ridership.
