Pune: PMRDA Gears Up for Second Phase of Encroachment Clearance Drive

Pune, 17th March 2025: After successfully removing over 2,500 unauthorized structures in the first phase of its anti-encroachment campaign, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to launch the second phase of the drive from March 17 to March 30.
During the initial phase, conducted from March 3 to March 13, illegal commercial shops and other structures covering approximately 2.5 lakh square feet were cleared along an 83-km stretch of highways and key roads. The upcoming phase will target additional encroachments across multiple highways and arterial roads, officials confirmed.
PMRDA officials have identified major highways within their jurisdiction—including the Pune-Nashik Highway, Pune-Solapur Highway, Pune-Mumbai Highway, and Pune-Satara Highway—as key areas where illegal structures have caused significant congestion.
“In the second phase, we will focus on clearing encroachments along routes such as Navle Bridge to Sarole (Pune-Satara Highway), Shevalwadi to Dive Ghat in Hadapsar, Navlakh Umbre to Chakan, Hinjewadi and Maan areas, as well as the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur road,” a senior PMRDA official stated.
Given that several of these locations fall within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, the encroachment removal will be a collaborative effort.
“We are working in coordination with PMC and PCMC to clear illegal constructions on roads and highways where traffic congestion has become a serious issue. Residents and business owners in affected areas are advised to voluntarily remove unauthorized structures to avoid forced demolition,” said PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase.
The initiative involves multiple agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRDC), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Limited (MSEDCL), and local police.
“Our goal is to create safer and more accessible roads by removing obstructions that contribute to traffic bottlenecks. We urge citizens to cooperate with officials to ensure a smooth execution of the drive,” Mhase added.
